What is nocturnal enuresis?

It is commonly referred to as bedwetting and refers to urinary incontinence during sleep or when the child does not wake up when he or she needs to void.

How common is it?

Approximately 15% of 5-year-olds are affected. Most kids will outgrow it eventually without any treatment at a rate of 15% per year. It can persist into the teenage years. Approximately 1-2% of 15-year-olds are still affected.

What are the side effects?

It can lead significant lack of self-confidence in the children which may lead to social avoidance and self-esteem issues. It can cause significant stress on the family in addition to the cost of dealing with regular accidents at night.

What causes it?

It can be caused by a variety of factors including genetic factors, maturational delay, nocturnal polyuria, small bladder capacity, or sleep-disordered breathing.

Can it be treated?

Yes, it can be treated with behavioral modifications, bed wetting alarms, and medications. The commonly used medications include Desmopressin (DDAVP), anticholinergics (oxybutynin), and imipramine.
